Coronet Peak

Holiday NZ Ad

Coronet Peak is one of New Zealand's oldest and most popular ski and snow board destinations. It lies in central Otago on the South island and is only about twenty minutes drive from the center of Queenstown. The road is sealed for the full length making the resort very easy to get to and when you get there you are greeted by excellent modern skiing facilities. The main service building was rebuilt in 2009 and includes ski and snowboard hire services, restaurants and cafes, security lockers, medical center and a comprehensive administrative center.

The ski slopes at Coronet Peak have something for everyone. There are three major chair lifts and slopes that range from beginner level through intermediate, right through to black diamond runs. Night skiing is available on floodlit slopes and snow cannons top up snow levels if nature is a bit light on. Coronet Peak is very reliable as a skiing destination as it lies in low southern latitudes were snowfalls are common. The views from the mountain have to be seen to be believed with Lake Wakatipu and many other snow covered mountains surrounding the city of Queenstown laid out below. Both skiing and snowboarding are very popular at Coronet Peak and like most modern ski resorts there is a snow park to try out your jumps and tricks. A comprehensive ski school also operated to help both beginners and intermediates improve their ability.

Everyone stays in Queenstown as there is no on snow accommodation at Coronet Peak. Shuttle Buses run to and fro every twenty minutes or so and the drive up the mountain is one of the easiest one in New Zealand with fully sealed access roads. From the ski slopes on Coronet Peak you can see the adjoining ski resorts on The Remarkables and at Cardrona. Queenstown accommodation also services both of these ski resorts. Queenstown is a fantastic place to stay. Brilliant accommodation surrounds the magnificent lake while the CBD is filled with fantastic restaurants and cafes. The hinterland is covered with wineries, deer farms and many other agricultural pursuits that provide the visitor with fresh local produce. Getting to Queenstown and Coronet peak is easy. There are direct flights from Australia and Christchurch. Many people hire a car from Christchurch and enjoy the fabulous drive through the alpine regions and then use the car for daily trips to the ski fields.

If you are a skiing or snowboarding enthusiast, then you must come and experience Coronet Peak on the south island of New Zealand.
